Sewing and Handicraft Skills

Although poverty is not the only cause of malnutrition in Indonesia, it is an important one. The Foundation for Mother and Child Health Indonesia provides access to sewing classes for mothers of all children attending any programme at FMCH Indonesia.

Twice each week mothers working in groups, are taught handicrafts, sewing, tailoring and business skills. Items that they make are sold at FMCH Indonesia where money raised is split between the mothers and FMCH.

Micro credit scheme

A micro credit scheme is in place enabling mothers to access a small loan to buy a sewing machine. They then have the opportunity to start up their own small businesses and work from home.

Many women opt to save part of the money they earn from the sale of items they make, and so an informal savings scheme has been set up for participating women.
